Our Mission Statement

Amsterdam Beautification Corps (ABC) is a grassroots volunteer organization with a vision for the City of Amsterdam, NY. Our vision is to beautify and enhance the appearance of our city by floral displays. Through small simple steps, planting flowers and cleaning our neighborhoods, we believe our efforts will inspire the community to pull together and join with us to revitalize our city.

A little history...

In 1998, the Amsterdam Beautification Corps was formed as a public-private partnership to enhance the streetscapes and green spaces in the city of Amsterdam. ABC is, and always has been, a totally volunteer group. We are determined to make, and keep, our city beautiful through city clean-ups, mass plantings, flower baskets, and seasonal decorations.

Plantings are important to to any local community for several reasons. To name a few:

-They improve the visual quality of the urban environment for residents and visitors to enjoy.
-They increase community pride by enhancing the attractiveness of the urban environment.
-They increase the appeal of the urban business district, thereby attracting more business to the city center.
-They decrease vandalism of city property.

The visual quality of the urban environment reflects on the community as a whole; a neglected urban environment suggests deteriorating economic conditions, and reduces its attractiveness to shoppers, residents, and tourists.

ABC would like to continue with the projects that we have done in the past. The various plantings and flower baskets are very expensive because not only the flowers have to be purchased, but there is an expense to maintain their beauty throughout the season. ABC needs volunteers to help with different projects, as well as donations to help with expenses.

We have held some fund-raisers in the past, one of which was a quilt raffle which is pictured in the photo gallery on this website. Most of our funding comes through donations. Assemblyman Paul Tonko has been very instrumental over the years in procuring a grant to help with the expenses.
